My lovely friend Melissa, gives an insightful point of view about race and being a black woman. Like many young college students of color, the subject of race is consistently brought up. Being in the School of Management, many of my classmates often bring the issue of my race up as I am am one of about 5% of black students. While the issue of race will always be a controversial and debatable topic, Melissa talks about combating stereotypes and just being an individual. The only way to combat stereotypes and move forward with racism is to talk and educate. Hopefully one day the world will get to a point where the color of our skin no longer matters.

I often find myself being put into this label. I tend to surround myself with different people from different backgrounds and lifestyles. Most times I end up learning how ones environment and culture change the way in which they perceive things.

I am a black woman and I am well aware of this. My…

Her Campus is a wonderful online magazine that focuses on collegiate women. I found this lovely site during the summer and I have been hooked ever since. Between school, work and clubs, I am super busy on campus all the time. Last weekend a few friends and I went to their 2nd Birthday party. It was a fun night and a great way to get off campus. Make sure to follow them on Twitter & Tumblr.

The Slogan of the Millennial Generation

“F**k B***es  & Get Money”

Scrolling through my Facebook feed I noticed that the acronym “FB & GM” was at the end of a few of my “friend’s” statuses. I had no clue what the letters stood for. A few days letter I noticed another Facebook “friend” write “F**k B*****es & Get Money” at the end of his status. I simply glared at my Blackberry and shook my head in disappointment.

Those who are born between the late 1970-the early 1990s are known as the Millennial generation or Generation Y. I am proud to say that I am a 1990’s baby but there are so many times that I am ashamed to be in this generation.  The world has changed dramatically during my life time. Two of the most influential things that have shaped my generation are technology and music (specifically Rap/Hip-hop).

“F**k B***es”:

Two words I really can’t stand are B***h and H**. I do not find those words as terms of endearment. I find them extremely disrespectful and degrading. In almost every rap song, a woman is referred as a B***h or an H**. Society has sexualized everything from the obvious music videos to children’s TV programs like Sesame Street. The disrespect of calling a woman a B**** has turned into a greeting. On my college campus, I constantly am around women saying “Hey, what’s up B****” or “That’s my B**** right there.” When women use these words towards each other, it encourages men to use it as well. Between media sexualizing every action and event, along with the constant glorification of sex, sex has turned from an intimate event shared by two people to casual mainstream event. Sex has turned from “Love” to “F***”. Is this right? Should sex be casually commercialized? I don’t have the answers for things but I do not appreciate walking down the street and men calling me a B**** and asking if they can F*** me. I find it disrespectful and inappropriate. Women need to come together and start showing respect for each other and demanding respect from men. That is the only way things are going to change. Some way question, should things change? This isn’t for me to decide but I do believe that our generation should have more respect for women and the act of sex.

Shoe Obsession Meets College Reality

**29 Pairs of Shoes Pictured -> Not all were Present**

I can’t get enough of shoes. It’s a hereditary issue that has been passed down by my mom. When I go into a shoe department my blood starts pumping and I can feel the adrenaline in my veins. My eyes begin to wonder all over the store trying to take a quick glimpse at what shoes I think I would like. I’m a size 6 (Yes, I know I have very tiny feet)!! So when I find a pair of shoes in my rare size that I like, it’s one of the best feelings in the world.

However, as I begin to get ready to go back to BU, I have the terrible issue of packing. Packing for college is probably one of the most stressful things. I then begin to ask myself questions as I sort through each shoe…What should I bring? Do I really need every pair? Where am I going to store all of these shoes?

Boston is totally different from New York . It gets cold the first week in October but it’s hot the first few weeks in September. At school I am known for always dressing business casual so I need shoes for that. But then I need shoes for going out, exercising, and casual wear. This is an issue I will always face as I pack but I think my fellow shoe addicts can sympathize with me.

Making the Switch to Apple

Fact: Apple Inc. is dominating the world. The company even has more money that the US government.

As of a few days ago, the only Apple product I own is an ipod nano. Last September, when I entered my first business class, I was blown away by all of the Macs staring me in the face. I have a 17’’ HP laptop. I am known as the girl with the huge laptop by my friends and classmates. I’m 5’2 ½ ; my laptop is larger than my entire torso vertically!! Carrying that laptop has caused me difficulty but since it’s only a year old, I won’t be purchasing a new laptop soon.

My twin sister, Chelsea, and I never even gave Macs a chance; I currently feel as I’m paying for this mistake now. Macs are extremely versatile, stylish, light, and have a great processor.  My mom received an iPad for work and an iPhone for her birthday. My entire family has been obsessed with the iPad this summer. Needless to say, I am saving up/hoping I get an iPad for Christmas. One of my freshman mistakes was not staying current with business and global news. I am determined to become more knowledgeable and productive this year. With all of the apps like Bloomberg, Keynote, and OmniGraffle, I feel like getting an ipad is a great move. Not to mention, all of the entertainment apps and games that are available; it’s truly a great piece of technology.

Oh Wait…I Can’t Eat That

The Business Meal: one of the most important aspects in the business world. Each culture has their own standards when it comes to business etiquette. Etiquette Scholar teaches the Do’s and Don’ts of dining etiquette. Some of my favorite tips include: Be on time (Arriving late leaves a bad impression), Dress appropriately (While this may seem like common sense, make sure you know what kind of restaurant you are going to), and Avoid Complicated Meals (This isn’t a time to eat ribs or lobster; order something simple).
